Stamford, Conn. – June 2, 2022 – Dr. Joseph Rosa has been named medical director of the Fred Weisman Americares Free Clinic of Bridgeport. In his new volunteer role, Dr. Rosa will provide guidance on clinic policies and procedures, support volunteer recruitment and serve as an advocate within the community.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Rosa join the Bridgeport clinic’s leadership team,” said Americares Free Clinics Executive Director Karen Gottlieb. “His extensive experience and strong leadership skills will be invaluable as we work to further enhance the health care services we provide to area residents in need.”
Dr. Rosa, a Trumbull resident, brings to Americares nearly 40 years of experience delivering high-quality health care to Connecticut residents. He currently works as a practicing endocrinologist for Yale New Haven Health’s Northeast Medical Group in Trumbull and is affiliated with Bridgeport Hospital and St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He began volunteering at the Fred Weisman Americares Free Clinic of Bridgeport in 2021 to help meet the health needs of the clinic’s low-income, uninsured patients.
“Volunteering at the Americares Bridgeport clinic has been a very rewarding experience and I look forward to making an even greater impact as the clinic’s volunteer medical director,” said Dr. Rosa.
Dr. Rosa has also held several volunteer leadership roles within the local medical community. He is the past president of the American Diabetes Association’s Connecticut chapter, past president of the American Diabetes Association’s Fairfield County leadership council and past president of the Fairfield County Diabetes Association. He also served as the chairman of the Fairfield County American Diabetes Association’s planning committee, as a member of the Fairfield County Medical Association’s executive committee and as co-chairman of the Bridgeport mayor’s diabetes initiative from 2006 to 2007.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rosa has also held a number of academic roles, including associate professor of medicine at the University of Connecticut, lecturer at Sacred Heart University’s Physician Assistant School, associate professor of medicine at Yale New Haven Health, associate professor at Quinnipiac University’s Netter School of Medicine and clinical instructor for the Yale School of Nursing.
Dr. Rosa earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Fordham University and received a medical degree from the Universidad del Noreste in Tamaulipas, Mexico. He went on to complete his residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he was named chief medical resident during his tenure and later served as chief of endocrinology from 2004 to 2011. Dr. Rosa then completed a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
Dr. Rosa has been lauded for his work as a physician and has received numerous awards honoring his achievements, including the 2004 St. Vincent Medical Center’s St. Vincent De Paul Award, the 2015 Yale New Haven Hospital’s Bridges to Excellence Recognition for Diabetes Care Award, the 2017 UConn Health Outstanding Clinician Award and has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 20-consecutive years.
The Fred Weisman Americares Free Clinic of Bridgeport provides quality primary care services to more than 400 low-income, uninsured patients every year. Patients receive comprehensive health services including exams, medications, laboratory work, diagnostic services and vaccines free of charge.
Americares operates the largest free clinic network in Connecticut, serving an average of more than 2,500 low-income, uninsured Fairfield County residents annually. In addition to Bridgeport, Americares has clinics in Danbury, Norwalk and Stamford.
