Americares Free Clinics
Stamford, Conn. – Sept. 14, 2016 – Americares Free Clinics and Walgreens are offering flu shots to help keep the uninsured healthy this winter. Flu shots will be available at no cost in October to eligible residents age 18 and over during walk-in clinics at the Americares Free Clinics in Danbury, Norwalk, Stamford and Bridgeport. Immunizations will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis by a Walgreens pharmacist. Participants cannot have any health insurance, including Medicaid.
“The flu is miserable for everyone, but it can be even more of an issue for those who have to miss work as a result,” said Americares Free Clinics Executive Director Karen Gottlieb. “Together with Walgreens, we are helping more Connecticut residents and communities stay healthy this winter.”
Walgreens Pharmacist Angela Nikitas gives a flu shot at the Bob Macauley Americares Free Clinic last September.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months of age and older get vaccinated by October. Seasonal influenza can lead to serious illness, hospitalization and even death. Young children, the elderly and adults with underlying medical conditions are most at risk. The CDC estimates influenza vaccination prevented approximately 1.9 million illnesses and 966,000 medical visits associated with influenza in the 2014-2015 flu season.
